Transrotor has decided to manufacture its own tone arm, rather prosaically named TRA 9 - short for Transrotor Arm - with a length of nine inches!
The Transrotor TRA 9 arm is of excellent workmanship, its mechanics are a real pleasure to use, it does not leave its mark on the music and it allows even very high quality cells to develop their full sound potential. To put it briefly: The TRA 9 is a bright new star on the horizon of high-end tone arms
The creation of a resonance-free tone arm tube is of decisive importance. This is why the Transrotor design team opted for a two-part solution, with a tapered part connected to the bearing block. Initially, the plan was to insert a second tube and attach the read head to the opposite side. If the tubes overlapped, they would then attenuate each other. However, no standard tube with the extremely tight tolerances required for this application could be found on the market. For this reason, the tube of the front tone arm is machine machined from a solid piece of aluminium.
But it is not only the different dimensions of the two tubes that minimise resonance. Transrotor's experience in building turntables has made it possible to combine different aluminium alloys in such a way that optimum damping is achieved. But with a tone arm, it's not just about controlling vibrations, it's also about getting them as quickly as possible. The idea of gluing the two tubes together was therefore rejected. Thanks to the very small tolerances, the two tubes touch each other over a large area and can be simply screwed together.
The solid bearing block is designed to be completely flat on top. Thanks to this feature, you can simply check the horizontal alignment of the arm by placing a spirit level during adjustment. Two threaded rods are used for sensitive height adjustment.
To facilitate height adjustment, a plexiglass parallelogram is supplied with the tone arm and two threaded rods that are screwed into the corresponding threaded sockets. With these two rods, the arm can be moved up and down extremely sensitively.
The counterweight is precisely adjustable by turning a centrally positioned screw. The support force can be set precisely to the second decimal place. The chrome-plated brass weights can be replaced with different weights if required.
The anti-slip force is magnetically generated and can be precisely adjusted. The read head can be rotated for azimuth adjustment.
Extremely low pull-out forces and very little play are decisive for a tone arm bearing. For this reason, Transrotor uses high-quality Japanese steel bearings for the horizontal guide and ceramic bearings for the vertical guide. Both bearings are reinforced in relation to each other to eliminate any unwanted play.
Transrotor offers two options for mounting the arm: The standard, circular type with a diameter of 43 millimetres and the extended SME type, which allows mounting on surfaces prepared for an SME tone arm.
- Black, matt anodised.
- Black/Chrome, the base is black, matt anodised. The tone arm is chrome plated in bright silver.
- Black/Gold, the tone arm substructure is black anodised. The tone arm and upper structure are gold-plated.
- Ruthenium, Ruthenium is a noble metal of the platinum group.
